Midwest & Remote Towns Future Energy System Planning

We're building the future energy systems of our network in Mid West, Gascoyne, and Goldfields towns.

Increasing renewable energy

In September 2021, Horizon Power received a Commonwealth grant to explore the feasibility of transitioning nine Mid West, Gascoyne and Goldfields towns to 100% renewable energy.

The feasibility study to explore transitioning the towns to 100% renewables is now complete. Whilst not considered viable at this time, we are continuing to work on determining the appropriate level of renewables for each system.

Stepping towards a greener future

In Cue, Meekatharra, Sandstone, Yalgoo, Wiluna, Norseman and Mt Magnet we buy electricity from a company that specialises in generating power and then use our network to supply this electricity to all the houses and businesses in these towns. This arrangement is reaching a decision point meaning an opportunity for Horizon Power to consider how it supplies power to the towns.

These seven towns are being assessed for their future energy systems as a critical step towards a greener, cleaner future.

Horizon Power owns the power station assets in Nullagine, Menzies and Gascoyne Junction. In these locations we are progressing land acquisition in preparation for future energy systems with more renewables.

Community driven solutions

Communities are at the heart of our future energy system planning framework. Visiting towns and talking about their needs assists us in determining the generation solutions, amount of renewable energy, location of infrastructure and potential customer products we could offer.

We’ve heard from Traditional Owners, residents, business owners and Shires of each town that there is strong support for more renewable energy in the generation mix, and a strong desire to access rooftop solar.

What's happening now?

During our initial engagement with local communities, we heard from residents, business owners, and Shires that there is strong support for more renewable energy in the generation mix, and a strong desire to access rooftop solar.

Since those visits, our project team has continued to work closely with local Shires, Traditional Owner groups and other government departments to progress the project and undertake due diligence for land acquisition.

We value ongoing discussions with our communities. If you’d like to contribute ‘get in touch’ with your feedback below.

We’re working with local communities across regional WA, to design ways to shift our traditional electricity systems towards renewable energy solutions.

Along the way, we’re exploring options to help reduce the cost of your electricity and investing in a greener future for everyone.

Horizon Power acknowledges the Traditional Custodians throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders past, present and emerging.
