Community Wave
If you’re a contractor or installer connecting rooftop solar, battery or EV chargers, you play a vital role in our Virtual Power Plant. It’s known as Community Wave.
We’re here to help you make sense of Community Wave so you can share the right information with your customers:
- you'll find answers to questions your customers might ask; and
- the technical specifications to enable Smart Connect Solar and Battery.
What is Community Wave?
Community Wave is our very own Virtual Power Plant (VPP) which helps customers get more value out of their solar and battery energy systems.
It connects your system to the local network - and balances the supply and demand of electricity across the whole community.
This means fewer outages and more access to solar energy for everyone.

+ Community Wave help and support
All solar and battery installations need to be Smart Connected
To keep the network stable, Community Wave connects to the customer's assets using a Secure Gateway Device (SGD).
This allows us to adjust solar energy generation at different times of the day. In return, eligible customers can access exclusive buyback rates for exporting excess energy back to the grid.
If your customer is adding a battery to their existing system, they must connect it to an inverter compatible with our SGD.
Why?
Monitors all energy sources
Connected to the network including rooftop solar, power stations and renewable energy farms.
Smooths rooftop solar energy
Due to its intermittent generation caused by weather. This drives uneven energy flow into the network.
Maintains network stability
By uniformly turning turn down solar generation when this is at risk.
Training requirements
To install Smart Connect Solar, you need to complete our new Solar Acreditation Australia course and get up to speed on our technical requirements.
complete a free micro accreditation through either the Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) or
SwitchDin Academy.
As a part of your training, there is also a variety of supporting materials. Links to these resources will be provided through your training.
Once you have completed the registration process you can download the Stormcloud App on your mobile or tablet.
If further assistance is required during install, SwitchDin's technical support will be provide assistance:
Complete the free micro accreditation
So you're approved to install install solar and battery across the Horizon Power network.
Compatible inverters
For all solar and battery connections
Only Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved inverters and battery models, can be connected to our network.
For Basic EG connections (less than 30kVa)
A subset of CEC approved inverter models can be used. These are models currently compatible with the SGD (supplied by us). This list will continue to grow as more inverters become compatible.
See the compatible inverter list below.

Inverter configuration update
All systems must be configured with Australia Region C settings in accordance with AS4777.2:2020.Horizon Power has been made aware of an issue with the connect and reconnect over-frequency setting in AS4777.2:2020 (Section 4.7 in our DER Technical Requirements). For new Basic and LV EG connections, this setting is required to be updated to 50.5Hz to comply with the new Technical Requirements.
Horizon Power is working with Standards Australia to have this updated in AS4777.2:2020. However, in the interim, a manual update to this setting is recommended to ensure inverters operating in our service area work correctly.
