Smart Connect Solar & Battery
As more people connect solar to the network, it can make it harder to maintain a reliable power supply for everyone. That's why we've introduced energy management. This allows us to turn up or down the solar energy your system generates to maintain network stability - only when needed.
We call this Smart Connect Solar & Battery. If you’re installing solar or battery, your system will be energy managed and connected to Community Wave.
How does energy management work?
Smart Connect Solar uses internet-connected solar technology. This helps us manage high levels of solar energy on the network.
It also ensures a safe and reliable power supply for the whole community. The technology tackles the challenges of balancing the flow of energy across the network.
What are the benefits?
Smart Connect Solar is about more than saving on bills — it’s about using your energy when it works best for you, and helping your community.
What is energy management?
We want to be transparent about how we manage your solar and battery assets, to keep the electricity network reliable for everyone.
Solar (but smarter)
Your solar system will be smart connected via a Secure Gateway Device connected to our Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS).
To keep your electricity network stable for everyone, we occasionally need to adjust how your solar energy flows to the grid (think of it like traffic control). This helps prevent power outages and, on average, won't reduce your solar generation by more than 10% over a year.
Battery (but future ready)
If you're connecting battery, the system settings will be setup to maximise self consumption (and bill savings). And ready to be smart connected down the track.
This means your system won't export any excess energy to the network during the sunniest part of the day. Or charge during the network peak in the afternoon between 3pm - 9pm - when the whole community uses the most energy at once.
Compatible solar and battery inverters
You'll need to ensure your solar and battery inverters are compatible with our SGD to be eligible for Community Wave and comply with our technical requirements.
Please double check with your solar retailer or installer to ensure they select a compatible inverter from this list - to ensure your system complies with our technical requirements.

The SGD is a small communication device that connects your solar and battery assets to Horizon Power's energy management system.
When energy management is needed, smart connected solar systems will have the amount of solar energy generated reduced. This applies to both the energy used and the exported amount.
This amount is the same across all smart connected systems in the town, so it's fair.
Horizon Power assets, like our solar and wind farms will be turned down first - so we can minimise the impact of energy management on customer systems.
No.

Yes. You can view how much you’ve been energy managed each month by logging into My Account.
Navigate to the Usage section and select 'Insights' and open the section 'Monthly summary':

Yes. Your installer will configure the battery system settings during installation - as per our technical requirements. This means your system:
- won't export any excess energy to the network during the sunniest part of the day; or
- charge during the network peak in the afternoon between 3pm - 9pm (when the whole community uses the most energy at once).
Keeping your data safe is our priority. Your solar and battery assets connect to our energy management system via the Secure Gateway Device (SGD).
This has embedded cyber security to keep your solar data safe.
It can only communicate with your SGD and can’t access other devices connected to the internet such as mobile phones or laptops.
Feed In Management is an older technology we use to energy manage systems greater than 30kVA.
Horizon Power will be transitioning the old devices across to Smart Connect Solar at no additional cost to the customer.
Horizon Power acknowledges the Traditional Custodians throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to the land, waters and community. We pay our respects to all members of the Aboriginal communities and their cultures; and to Elders past, present and emerging.
