WA residential battery rebate and no-interest loan scheme announced

From 1 July 2025, eligible Horizon Power customers will be able to apply for the WA Government residential battery rebate of up to $7,500 and no-interest loan scheme of up to $10,000.

The State Government has announced a residential battery scheme that offers a rebate to support Western Australians purchase of a solar battery. Residential batteries can help WA households save on their power bills, while supporting a cleaner energy future.    

For eligible Horizon Power customers, a residential battery rebate of up to $7,500 is available, with the value of the rebate determined by the size of the battery installed. The WA residential battery rebate will also be complemented by a no-interest loan program, where eligible households can borrow up to $10,000 to purchase either a battery or battery and solar package for their household. Access to the program will be means tested and eligible Western Australians will have up to 10 years to repay the loan.

The Western Australian Government has announced a residential battery scheme to assist eligible Western Australians in purchasing a home battery to save on their power bills, while supporting a clean energy future for regional WA.

The battery scheme has two components; a battery rebate and the no-interest loan offer. For eligible residential Horizon Power customers, a battery rebate of up to $7,500 is available. The value of the rebate is determined by the size of the battery installed, with the rebate at $750 per kilowatt hour (kWh). The scheme also offers a no-interest loan to eligible customers, to purchase either a residential battery or a residential battery and solar package.

Residential properties in Western Australia with a residential electricity account with Horizon Power, including home business customers. 
 
Excluded residential properties include those owned by State, Commonwealth or Local Government entities, banking and financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and mining/resources companies.

The battery rebate is limited to one per property connection

As a part of the residential battery scheme, there is also a no-interest loan available to eligible customers of up to $10,000. It can be used to purchase either a residential battery or a residential battery and solar package.  

Loan eligibility will be limited to households falling below a specified income threshold. The limit is to be determined by the Western Australian Government and has not yet been announced. The minimum loan amount will be $2,000.

To assist eligible Western Australians in accessing a home solar battery through reducing the upfront cost. Installing a solar battery can assist households in saving on their electricity bill, as a battery system can reduce energy consumption from the grid through increasing self-consumption of existing solar power generation.

The criteria for battery installation and equipment includes:
  • Batteries and inverters must be on the list of approved and compatible equipment (List to be announced soon)
  • Battery retailers and installers must be registered with the WA Residential Battery scheme (List to be announced soon)
  • Installations will need to meet Horizon Power’s Technical Requirements, including being configured to Smart Connect (DERMS). More information can be found at: https://www.horizonpower.com.au/contractors-installers/
  • Batteries with a larger capacity than 10kWh, that are on the approved equipment list* are eligible for the maximum rebate of $7500 for Horizon Power customers. The national average battery size is between 12-13 kWh.

  • Retailers and installers must have a Western Australian address for their business.
  • Financial and integrity standards must be continuously met.
  • Previous pricing is to be published ahead of each round of rebates for full disclosure. Pricing disclosure arrangements are to be developed by the scheme administrator.
  • Retailers and installers will be required to demonstrate capacity to deliver in order to participate in the scheme and continue to demonstrate ability to meet technical and safety standards, including being subject to compliance audit testing. Further details of accreditation and compliance arrangements are being developed by the Western Australian Government in consultation with industry.

Note that at this time, no battery retailers or installers have yet been selected for involvement in the Western Australian Government residential battery scheme.
